A community’s generosity: Matching gifts boost our school’s fundraiser

When an earthquake struck Haiti in 2010, the scale of the devastation was unimaginable. Thousands of lives were lost and countless people left without basic necessities. Witnessing this disaster made me realize how interconnected we all are, regardless of geography.

I chose to fundraise for Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) because they provided immediate medical assistance in Haiti after the disaster. Their commitment to delivering care in emergencies, regardless of race, religion or political affiliation resonated deeply with me. I wanted to help raise awareness and support for their vital work.

Many people donated to our school fundraiser without hesitation, especially when they learned it was for MSF. A generous member of our community even offered to make a matching donation, meaning they would double the final amount we raised.

My fundraising experience was both humbling and rewarding, showing me the joy of helping others and inspiring others to do the same. When we fundraised, a kindergarten student donated their entire piggy bank to help someone they didn’t know. I felt immense pride knowing we had taught them empathy and compassion.

I would encourage others to donate or start a fundraiser. It’s easier than ever with many organizations ready to assist and raise awareness in schools. Today’s fundraising is efficient and often online, eliminating the need to handle cash while instilling important moral values in our children and community.

Helping others not only brings hope to those in need but also builds stronger character in us. I hope we can all see how we can care for others, even if we don’t know them personally. It’s a reminder that our actions, no matter how small, can have a significant impact. Together, we can show that compassion knows no boundaries.
